Changes to the School

The new Cowanesque Valley Junior-Senior High School is located on a thirty-acre site, formerly on the "Fair Grounds," one mile west of Westfield, PA on route 49. The facilities provide for a full program of school services: Classrooms and laboratory instruction, shop practice and agricultural experimentation, homemaking practice, commercial training, research and study, health service, food service, field play and practice, student activities, conference and administration. The yellow brick exterior walls are enhanced by aluminum window frames and sashes along with the hollow metal, plate glass exterior doors. Walking down the corridor and into one of the classrooms, one would notice the asphalt tile and plastic tile floors, the flush veneered wood doors, beige yellow tile window stools, and the slate blackboards, with aluminum trim.Building Completed

Intricacies of the wiring system make possible the restful day-brite lighting, seen in all the classrooms, fire alarm, the electronic bell and clock system, emergency lighting, the much-used public address system, and gymnasium scoreboard. Outside again, we find concrete sidewalks, bituminous driveways and parking areas. The overall cost of the building was $1,340,000.

1959-First Graduating Class

In 1959, the first class to graduate from this building walked out the front doors to the world beyond. Although the basic outside structure of the building has not changed tremendously since that time, many upgrades have occurred throughout the years. One no longer walks down tiled hallways, but carpeted ones, and the glass-encased mezzanine has been converted into a much needed classroom space. The business rooms, which once contained typewriters, have become computer labs, and the main/guidance office has expanded to better meet the needs of our students. Slate blackboards are now Whiteboards with erasable markers, and many rooms contain interactive Promethean boards with projectors where the visual world of technology can come to life. Numerous other rooms and areas have been improved over the years to maintain the vigilant action of keeping up with the educational demands of our growing society. Other things that have changed over the years are the faces here at CV, but one thing remains constant among those changing faces, and that is the importance of the success of our students as they move beyond these doors to the world outside. This building provides a place where administrators, teachers, support staff, and students can come and work together for the good of our community, whether that be local, county, or worldwide. These walls provide a solid place for students to learn about the world around them and to learn the skills they need to be successful in that world, wherever they may go.
