The mission of the Sports Medicine Department is to enhance
the quality of health care for all Upper School student athletes within the
Northern Tioga School District through prevention, assessment, first-aid,
recognition of injuries, and treatment of those athletic injuries.
What is an Athletic Trainer?
**Courtesy of Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Association
(PATS)**
Athletic Trainers are multi-skilled health professionals who
hold a college degree from an accredited college/university and are trained to
provide services for those who are physically active. At this time, Athletic Trainers (AT’s) have a
minimum of a bachelor’s degree; however, more than 70% of nationally certified
athletic trainers have master or doctoral degrees. The education of AT’s is steeped heavily in
the basic and applied sciences, such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology,
Physiology, Anatomy, Psychology, and Sociology.
There also is a strong clinical internship requirement for all Athletic
Training Students (ATS), mandating experience under a nationally certified
athletic trainer.
Athletic Trainers are educated to function within the scope
of practice that includes at least 12 competency areas published by the
National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).

Administration
To become certified as an athletic trainer, students must
pass a 3 part comprehensive test administered by the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC). An athletic trainer cannot practice without
being certified by the NATABOC. Once certified, they must complete at least 80
continuing education units every 3 years to remain certified.
Certified
by National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), an Athletic Trainer is a
member of the allied health community whose role is to care for and help
prevent athletic-related injuries under the direction of a licensed physician.
The
priority of the Northern Tioga district Athletic Trainer is to provide on-site care
for as many sports as possible within the district. Because of
limitations, there may or may not be an Athletic Trainer available for all
sports contests. Due to the high risk of severe injury, Junior Varsity
and Varsity games will have coverage for all home games. Travel will occur for Varsity Football only.
If
any athlete is injured during athletic participation, he/she needs to be
evaluated by the athletic trainer.
